THE QUICK VERDICT

Who it suits.

  • Packing solar small: folds to 525.5 × 685 × 40 mm, about 7.9 kg
  • Camping in the shade with the panel in the sun, using the 6 m lead

Check first

  • You have a solar regulator, DC-DC charger, battery box or power station solar input: it is 23.5V open-circuit, not for bare battery terminals
  • Expect less than 200W on hot days (−0.36% per °C)

KEEPING A FRIDGE GOING

Can it keep up with a fridge?
On sunny days, yes.

About 35Ah back in 3 hours of sun

On the 12V fridge calculator’s maths (allowing 30% for heat, angle and cabling), 200W in 3 hours of full sun puts back about 35Ah a day. The 40–60 L fridges Seekstead covers use up to about 31.2Ah a day on their makers’ figures, so on a sunny day it keeps up.

Check your solar input

Its open-circuit voltage is 23.5V and it gives about 9.9A at 20.1V. Connect it through a solar regulator, or a DC-DC charger, battery box or power station with a solar input that accepts that.

Park in the shade, panel in the sun

The 6 m extension lead lets the fridge and car stay in the shade while the blanket sits in full sun, as Kings suggests.

Hot panels make less

Kings lists a power temperature coefficient of −0.36% per °C, so on hot days expect less than 200W. Angle it at the sun with the 45° kickstands.

QUESTIONS

Good to know.
Before you buy.

Can I plug it straight into a battery?

Not straight to the terminals: its open-circuit voltage is 23.5V. Use a solar regulator, or a DC-DC charger or battery box with a solar input.

Will it charge a power station?

If the power station’s solar input accepts about 20–23.5V and 10A and you have the right plug adapter. Check its manual.

How many sun hours do I need?

For the fridges Seekstead covers, about 3 hours of full sun a day on the calculator’s maths. Try your own setup in the 12V fridge calculator.

What’s the warranty?

Kings lists a 2-year warranty on the blanket.
