START OUTSIDE
Find the sky before the mounting spot.
The easiest place to put a dish is not always the best place to connect. Trees, rooflines and other obstacles can interrupt its view as satellites move overhead. Start with the Starlink app’s obstruction check at a safely accessible proposed location, before buying a permanent mount.
Useful inside
The terminal’s sky view and your indoor Wi-Fi coverage are separate problems. A clear dish position does not guarantee strong Wi-Fi in every room.
Practical between
Think about the cable route, safe power, weather exposure and who will install the permanent mount. Keep walkways clear.
A roof installation is not a required first step. If the job involves heights, drilling, electrical work or an uncertain mounting surface, have an appropriately qualified installer assess it.
KNOW YOUR HARDWARE
Standard and Mini are not the same setup.
STANDARD 4 X
Put the router where you need it.
The current specification shows a separate Router 3 and a supplied 15 m Starlink cable. Average power consumption is listed as 75–100 W. Plan both the outdoor terminal position and a useful indoor router location.
MINI
Wi-Fi travels with the terminal.
Mini integrates its Wi-Fi router and lists average consumption of 25–40 W. That reduces the equipment to carry, but placing it outside for clear sky can still affect the signal reaching you inside a vehicle or building.
These are manufacturer averages, not a power-supply rating or a battery-runtime promise. Use the instructions for your exact kit generation; cables and accessories are not universally interchangeable.
What about powering Mini from a battery?
Check the battery output, cable and connector together. The Mini specification requires a minimum 100 W USB-PD supply at 20 V/5 A when using Starlink’s USB-C to barrel-jack accessory. A charger labelled “USB-C” alone does not establish compatibility.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL
A setup you can live with.
Confirm the service and exact kit.
Check the order, activation state, plan and service location. A travel plan and a fixed-address plan have different permissions.
Trial a safe position.
Use the kit’s instructions and app guidance, with an unobstructed view and stable placement. Do not leave equipment where it can fall, blow over or become a trip hazard.
Plan permanent mounting properly.
Match the mount to the exact terminal and surface. Include cable length, weather sealing, building permissions and installer cost before committing.
Connect and check the real rooms.
Follow the kit’s connection sequence. Once online, test where you actually work, watch or call. Move or extend Wi-Fi deliberately rather than changing the dish position blindly.
BEFORE YOU CALL IT DONE
Test the experience you wanted.
Try a video call, a stream and the usual devices at the times you use them. Look at app alerts and obstruction information. If one distant room struggles but a device near the router works, investigate the local Wi-Fi path first.
- Keep your kit model and installation instructions somewhere easy to find.
- Record the final dish position and cable route for future maintenance.
- Check the current provider return and service terms before relying on a trial period.
